HISTORIC FRAMINGHAM HOUSES | Peter and Sarah Clayes House
This series of limited edition notecards are reproduced from a group of watercolors painted by artist William Chignalo. These cards are available individually or in packets of four.
The back of the card reads:
“Peter and Sarah Clayes House
Built 1693
The house was built for Peter Clayes and Sarah Bridegs Clayes, who was accused of witchcraft in Salem Massachusetts, She escaped from prison in Ipswich before settling in Framingham’s Salem’s End in 1693.
Peter Clayes took part in organizing the Town and its government, and the first church. He was a signer of the charter for both, and was the first Selectman of the the Town, Town Treasurer and the first Assessor of the First Parish Church.
Orginally a salt box, the house was remodeled and added to several times (by Colonel David Brewer in 1776 and John C. Bixby in 1837). According to legend, a first floor space enclosed within the central chimney was used as a refuge from Indians, and also provided access to the attic, used before the Civil War as a station on the Underground Railway.”
